Hey guys, those of you with a 640 and the newer two piece diffuser. When you are direct grilling, are you just removing the door or are you removing the whole plate?

The two piece sounds like the way to go for versatility. Is this what most folks do?
It allows the cleaning of the ash before each cook without removing the entire heat diffuser plate.
I dont have to remove the full plate after a cook. Just take the door and the burn pot out and vacuum. On big cooks with 12 chickens or pork butts I will remove the diffuser due to the large amount of ash and grease. Ribs are not very greasy and not that long of a cook so I just take the door off and vacuum the area I can reach.
I went ahead ordered one from atbbq.com. my local guy doesn't carry the two piece option.
Should we be foiling the 2 piece diffuser?
And I have heard several options for cleaning one was a plastic tool another a 4/5" scraper/putty knife.
Thanks
I don't foil mine. A metal or plastic scraper is fine. You can't hurt it, it's steel
I'm a foiler. What I can tell you that if you like to foil the one piece is much easier as you do not have to deal with the trap door/trying to find a good place. A flat surface raises the door while you are trying to wrap. I threw my original one piece away and am now considering buying a one piece just for convenience Don't get me wrong. I love the two piece for the obvious versatility but am thinking having both is a better plan for me.

Hmm, hadn't thought of magnets. Thanks...you saved me $50, I owe you a beer!

I used big bolts to hold the foil down, worked great 4 bolts one in each corner.

Are the magnets not affected by the heat - even over time? Seems like a GREAT idea
I don't use anything to hold the foil down. just lay it on the defuser and tuck about an inch under the end were the grease runs off. works like a charm.
