I'm going to put probe ports in my 640.
I'm very nervous about drilling the hole in the wrong place.
Where did you put (or have put) your ports and do you wish you would have moved them a little (or a lot). Maybe more towards the front or back. Maybe a little higher or lower....and why.
I have the top shelf. Do I put one above the top shelf rails for it and one lower for the grates or ?????
Please post measurements and a few pictures if you can.
Thanks,
Mike18
I would place one above the top shelf and the other below. I don't think I'd worry to much about front to back. Just place them where you would like to have them.
Good Luck
Mike
Do you guys know if there is a document on installing the door thermometers?
check out this section in this forum (Manuals, Troubleshooting, Best Practices, FAQs, Cooker Registration)
you will find it there if you haven't already.
I order a probe port a while back but have not installed it yet. I have a YS1500 and saw another gentleman online with his installed from factory on the hopper side. Would you have a document of where for me to install mine?
Here are the instructions for installing on a 640 or 480: viewtopic.php?f=62&t=361
You can do the same with the 1500, just measure back from the front and put it just under the upper grate like the 640 and 480.
If you choose, you can put it anywhere you would like, as long as you can get the hole drilled.
i have a YS1500 and there is a hole on the opposite end of the hopper. It is not on any of the product drawings. is it a place to put my probe.
Please post up a picture of what you are seeing so we can better know what you are looking at.
Here is where the probe ports were placed by Yoder that I ordered with my 1500. These are located just under the 2nd shelf as Herb mentioned.
Wicked Chicken nailed it. I have one of these ports but not two. I assumed it was for a probe but wasn't sure b/c i can only fit one cable in the port. I guess i can install another one.
I can get 2 or 3 probes into a single port but that'll depend on how the probe itself is constructed. I see those covered ones from Tappecue being harder to get through.
Seb,
You can also take the plastic bushing out of the inside of the probe port without any ill effects. By doing so you can get more probes though..
You may not need another one. It's nice to have one both above and below the 2nd shelf.

Unscrew the cap, which will allow the plastic to expand and allow you to put a probe through. Then after the probe(s) are installed, tighten the cap to seal it up again.
I just got my YS 640 Probe Port from ATBBQ and I am looking for some advice on port placement. I currently have an iGrill that I love magnetically mounting to the hopper and would like to drill the hole for my probes on the left side of my Yoder. Is this possible or is it suggested against since that is where the fire is? All thoughts / suggestions are welcome!

I watched the following video which is great, but it didn't show or explain where to put the second port on YS680? Thanks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AII5USJgLV4
The holes should be drilled at 3 3/4" and 5" from the front of the cooker, as the video illustrates, for installing 2 probe ports.
Herb, I the response. I choose to move forward and drill the hole for the temp. probe on the left side. I promise to keep you up to date on how it works....Smoke On!
Herb, here is an update...I have direct grilled and smoked chicken thighs over the past week with a left side port install and all is good. I think the direct grill was the true test. I have an iGrill and they state that the stainless steel cabling can withstand 572 degrees of direct heat and held true. I have a big smoke starting tonight with two 7 lb. pork butts and 3 racks of ribs. I will update but I don't see this as a problem since the temp will be low. Let me know if you want to post pics! Smoke On!
