What exactly does the baffel do?

Will it help to get a constant temp from one side of the grill to the other side?

I have read people pull it all the way out and then push it in 3 or 6 inches? why?

Will the thermal jacket be ok to use in hotter climates like CA?
Is it ok to use in 90F+ temps? What benifits will it give?

Thanks for the help.

Here is the latest version of the YS640 manual, which has a section that discusses the sliding damper: download/Manuals/Pellet%20Manuals/Booklet_OpManual_YS640_v8.4_JULY2016_WEB.PDF

The thermal jacket is an insulator that helps the cooker hold heat. It does help with pellet consumption in colder climates. It is specifically made for low and slow temperature cooking during long cooks.
