Decisions

Been looking at the 640 and 1500 with comp cart now for quite sometime. Thought I was set on the 640 but after seeing and reading more about the 1500 I am rethinking it.

I suspect if I go the 640 route, I will always regret not buying the 1500. I was at my local dealer yesterday and was very, very close to ordering the 1500.

I am primarily interested in the 1500 due to the larger capacity and this will be used primarily for low and slows.

Would appreciate any thoughts on the 640 v. 1500 debate?

Thanks guys.

For what it's worth, I went through the same dilemma. Went with the 640. With both the full and half second shelf, I have a lot of versatility and have been able to cook a LOT of meat (rib racks are my friend). 8 shoulders. Two full-packers. Combination of a lot of stuff. Its been fine for my extended family gatherings and small neighborhood block parties.

There is much more to consider than just the size. The two are completely different cooking machines. The YS640 is more versatile in regards to grilling, as the fire is much closer to the heat diffuser and cooking grate, and the temperature range is 150 to 600. The YS1500 is more like an offset cooker, as the fire is further below the HMS plate and cooking grates, to emulate the low entry point of the heat like an offset cooker, and has a temperature range of 175 to 500. Also, the difference in weight between the two models is very substantial.

Thanks for your thoughts guys. I am primarily wanting a smoker and i guess that, along with the increased capacity is why I am seriously considering the 1500. Will keep my BGE for grilling and other high heat cooks - pizza, calzones, etc..

Really like the idea that the 1500 was designed to mimic the offset stick burners.

I have read a lot of posts that say the Yoders do not have problems producing smoke flavor like other cheaper pellet grills. Does the 1500 perform better than the 640 at low and slow cooks? A more pronounced smoke flavor with the 1500?

Thanks again. I really appreciate all of the help.
