I purchased the 640s several months ago. It was manufactured 6-27-19 and I received it 7-5-19. On 7-10-19 I did the initial burn in as directed in the manual. The 640s over shot the 350 default temp to about 413 @ about 20 minutes in. It slowly came down and hovered in that 355-360 range until I shut it down about an hour later.

So today I started the 640s up for an afternoon smoke. Once it started showing smoke I went inside for about five minutes. When I returned to it my entire room was filled with smoke and the 640s was emitting smoke from every orifice. I have run stick burners, UDS's, other pellet grills, and ceramics but have never seen so much smoke. I was really concerned about a hopper fire so I stayed with it and monitored the hopper. The smoke cleared after I started fans and the smoker appeared to be operating normally with just a faint hint of smoking coming out of the exhaust. Its now about 10 minutes since I started it and its running and climbing from about 200. I went inside for five or six minutes and came back out to discover the 640s was at 400 and climbing. Thinking it was just the overshoot I just watched the temp gauge. Within another 4 minutes or so I shut it down at 605 and it was still climbing.

I just have a feeling something is amiss in my Yoder.

Anyone with anything simiular?

So, as an update, all is well. I appeared to have shut it down before it completed the warm up process. I was advised by Yoder to clean out the ash, turn it on, adjust it to the setting I wanted and let it run. I did just that. I set it to 240 rather than the default 350. The Yoder over shot it by 10 degrees then settled down into the right temp after about 30 minutes. However, I then turned it up to 350 and it over shot it by 50 degrees before starting to settle down.

So what I learned, turn it on, start at a low temp, and let it get stable. Then slowly bring it up if I am going to use a high temp so that the potential to overshoot is reduced.

just got my Y640s. Set it to 350 and the temp kept climbing well past 600. I turned it off, unplugged, re-plugged and tried again

Again it shot well past 600*

I plan on letting it cool- cleaning the ash and trying again. Hope this isn't a bigger issue... but sounds like your same scenario.

Similar behavior as what I’m seeing on my new ys640s, most notably when I have the direct grill grates in, and 2 piece diffuser insert removed. I power the smoker on and leave it set to 350. It will shoot up into the upper 500’s before starting to cool back down and settle. Not sure if this is expected behavior or not? Considering it got to 580 or so when set to 350, I’m a little hesitant to set it over 400.

This is expected anytime you are cooking with the access door removed. Direct heat rises to the thermocouple and that is the temperature displayed. I use my YS640 for direct grilling and have developed the following guidelines for choosing my temperature.

350 low setting
425 medium setting
500 high setting
