Good morning fellow smokers, i was wondering which digital thermometers you recomend? Right. now im using the maveric732.
Igrill 2 with ambient temp probe. Love it. Wish the range was better but the interface is excellent!
Cooking ribs right now with it!
I used an ET-732 before upgrading to an iGrill 2. Can't go wrong with either, but the iPhone interface is nice.
I don't use any digital thermometers any more. I use timings and a quick read thermometer for periodic testing.

Agreed. I rely on the Thermopen towards the end of the cook. Need to check many places on a butt to finish it. I did some chuck roasts this weekend, I used the ET-732 to monitor pit temps and the chuck roast temps. When the 732 said 155f, I checked, and panned the butts. Every hour after I checked with the Thermopen and pulled them with 3 pokes in each chuckie at 200-205. All done.
The 732 is a good easy one to have. I don't play with the alarms etc on them. I have had mine for over 3 years now and it's awesome. Need extra probes tho, they can go bad. You can use the meat probe as pit temp probe to find hot spots etc. No real reason to tho, anywhere from 5" to the left over the whole pit, temps are close enough across the smoker. 5" to the right there is a lot more heat. Reverse flow cooker, no big deal.
My ET-732 is used for very temp sensitive cooks like prime rib, tri-tip and turkey. The main BBQ meats get only a Thermapen or nothing other than feel. However, remote thermometers can be a fantastic tool to someone less experienced to learn timeframes and when to start checking for doneness. When you shouldn't opening the lid so often, it's one of the best tools a novice cook can have before they learn the skill of cooking by feel. I don't use mine very much at all, but I wouldn't be without it either.
After reading this thread I bought a thermapen today at all things BBQ. They are pricey! But wow it's awesome! Glad I picked one up, excited to use it for a cook!
