Started up my YS640 yesterday to smoke a butt and it sounded just like an 18-wheeler turning on the jake-brake. I don't know what was going on but the fan was making one more weird noise. It lasted for a minute then it stopped and smoothed out. Ran like normal for the whole smoke but seemed like there wasn't as much pressure behind the smoke coming out the stack. I'm wondering if one of the fans died on me. Is there a way to tell short of dismantling the end of the smoker? How long do the fans usually last?
Have you accomplished the annual cleaning of the fans and hopper area outlined in the manual?
Herb what page is that outlined on? I don't remember reading that and want to learn more.
I haven't. I've only had it for a few months and didn't know about cleaning out the fans.
Annual cleaning of fans? Had my unit 3 years. What is this new thing? Post new manual for me Herb HERE, a link will do. Don't know how I missed this.
Herb, you need to send emails to all the registered users that the manual has changed and a download link. Unless it doesn't affect me as a 3 year old unit. Don't think so. Get with the 2016 program, click, it's done...... Quick database click, add link... Done to all older buyers........
NOW....
The manuals and other information are housed here on the forum. All updates are immediately posted to the respective areas.

The fan and hopper cleaning have always been part of the manual.
FYI. I had the same thing happen last weekend. (10/22/16) The fan made a dry bearing noise on the first 2 startup attempts. 3rd time it worked normally. I have a older piece of test equipment here at my shop with a similar CPU fan & it makes that noise all the time so I recognized what the grill was doing. I don't think dirt is the issue, I've only had it 6 weeks or so. I'll monitor it and see if it happens again.
Keep us informed. The warranty on the fans is 3 years. You may also contact us via email at [email protected]
Thanks Herb, don't remember my manual having me opening the fan area for anything but broke stuff. I'll check.
On a good note, I had a fan kinda Jake brake on me once. Like my 10th cook. I brought it up and you sent me two fans and a tube of sealant no questions asked. It just hasn't done it since, and that's 2.5 years.
Thanks for the great customer service even with me being a PIA.
