Lid warping while cooking on grill grates

Interesting situation tonight. Grilling on the grill grates, 500 degrees for steaks. Had the lid warp a bit and not fit snugly when grilling. Gap on both sides and smoke coming out. I have pictures.

Did you remove the bar grates before putting in the grill grates?
